Santurce es Ley 2

Santurce es Ley 2 se celebro el pasado viernes, 22 de octubre de 2010. Ni la lluvia, ni la ley impidió que, este junte de arte con bacilon diera un resultado rotundo por segunda ocasión. Santurce es Ley demostró que el arte atrae sensibilidad, hubo participación del publico, de galerías y del barrio. No podemos mencionar a los “collectors” que todavía no entendemos porque no aparecen – con excepción de Hernández Castrodad – no se aparecen por Santurce, sus razones tendran.

Ese viernes me recordó los primeros años de CIRCA, revolcandose la cuidad de actividades paralelas. En esta ocasión de iniciativa comunitaria tuvimos música, arte, compañerismo, belleza y entretenimiento en general. Santurce es Ley tiene la magia del barrio y esta al parecer seguira creciendo a pasos agigantados. En esta edición se rehabilito un espacio antes abandonado que ahora se utiliza como estacionamiento. Justo allí fue donde se ubico el punto focal del evento, que fueron la música y gran parte de las exhibiciones. En este “parking” estilo feria se ubico la tarima y donde se presento el grupo El Macabeo. A su alrededor estaban los vagones en los cuales  se presentaron las galerías, proyectos e intervenciones de artistas o colectivos independientes como Bicijangueo, murales de Fresh Crew y Hello Again y las carpas ubicando a Om Studio y otra con venta de ropa y accesorios.

Tambien C787Studios que reunio a 17 artistas en la muestra Limited Edition y un espacio alterno para mostrar la continuación de San Juan Street Art. La 15 presento trabajos en papel de Fernando García Correa y justo al lado estaba la video intalación, Wild Invasion de Andrea Bauza. Un dato curioso fue que una vecina presto el balcón de su casa para esta producción lo que ya de por si muestra que Santurce es Ley puede ser algo que veamos todos los años y mas cuando los vecinos lo apoyan. Solo esperemos que esta actitud no se vea empañada como las Noches de Galería de San Juan.

Santurce es Ley 2 fue un manjar para las artes y la gozadera. Si esta es la manera que Puerto Rico puede bregar sin contratos y por cuenta propia, entonces, estamos hablando de que todavía hay esperanza para proyectos futuros de esta índole. Esperamos que tanto el gobierno como empresas privadas apoyen con dinero y suplan las necesidades de los artistas y proyectos independientes como este para provecho de nuestra cultura. El que no fue se lo perdio… se gozo…  felicitamos a todos los que de una manera u otra se esforzaron para que Santurce es Ley 2 fuera un exito y del agrado de todos.

Miritza Castillo - Out of Oil

Art have a long and influential global history, and certainly Puerto Rico is not the exception to this ever growing monster. On the past presentation of Becas Lexus at MAPR, a program that seeks to promote an art that is not only representational but have something conflictive, constructive or being said, something that add some relevance to contemporary culture, was not at all different from it past events. This time the artist who get the longed piece of cake was Myritza Castillo. She is one of the new rising stars in contemporary art in Puerto Rico and certainly by winning this grant, it is obvious that her career may have a turn up. A recent graduate from Universidad Complutence in Spain, her photography and video based work is at least for us something we tend to see in many exhibits in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The reason for this may be because of its quality, cleanness and subjective discourses toward modern issues.

The project this young artist presented at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) was called Out of Oil in direct reference to the inability to search new ways to sustain our modern way of life. It was a somewhat analytic metaphor of how we as consumers are totally dependent to non-renewable sources of energy and how we as producers and because of socio-political implications may be hand tied when dealing with self sufficient alternatives. She try to convey a long discussed issue that in someways may turn her dialog into a repetitive and almost futile intention. Mostly because her proposal fails to deal effectively toward the search of a plausible solution. Too much has been written on energy and still we have a blank paper. So, when an artist choose to comment on a model for sustainable living it is often the case that the proposal lacks the sufficiently amount of details to respond to the many questions the observer may have upon seeing the artwork.

I am not saying the artwork in this case fails to deliver a full scale experience, on the contrary. When I was referring to it I was talking in terms her socio-political approach. This is without a doubt a very hard discourse to reach as this is a phenomenon that brings with it boundary and geopolitical issues no more ignored in the modern society.

This was surely one of the most beautifully new media projects I had ever had experienced in any museums in Puerto Rico. Everything from the construction to the display were intelligently placed. The sound added the required atmosphere that most installations need but never had and the project was big enough to make the observer feel kind of awkward, uncomfortable or excited in the presence of it. Considering this I may say that this was a great project to see, although I would have love for it to have some kind of movement on the lights.

Besides that… Great Job Myritza!!!

An art exhibit of some of the best local Independent Artists currently residing in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Martin, Monroe and Broward Counties to be held at Artformz Alternative’s gallery space in the Miami Design District. A four person jury has chosen artists of exceptional talent either emerging, mid-career, or established, to showcase during the months of November and December including the December Art Fair Week in Miami.

Just as the title announces “Exosed!â€? will showcase to the community and especially to the Art Fair visiting foreigners an outstanding selection of work being done by our local artists. Artists were invited to submit up to three images for consideration. All original two- and three-dimensional work in drawing, painting, sculpture, video, mixed media, digital techniques, installation or photography is eligible for consideration (no mechanical prints, multiple giclees or reproductions).

Artformz is an artist-run Open Collective that maintains very high criteria and selects artists that have demonstrated a serious dedication to their career. Projects presented at Artformz are specifically designed to provide exposure to these selected artists that otherwise may not be readily available. Artformz has a high profile location in the center of the Miami Design District and has gained a reputation of respect in the community for very strong shows.

The gallery’s legacy is less to do with gaining curatorial reputation as with having enabled the artists involved to gain profile and increased opportunity. Artists selected for an exhibition with us in the past have used Artfromz as a stepping-stone to further opportunities as well as making sales and acquiring new collectors. Artformz strives to maintain a strong sense of artistic vision, ambitious approaches to the creation and presentation of work and the willingness to be experimental, combined with a passion for self-development and creative success. Artformz joins a significant global trend in which artists have taken control of the production and presentation of their own work.
