Exposed!

exposedThe exhibit “Exposed!” opening this Saturday November 10th, at Artformz Alternative can be described as nothing less than a Brave undertaking. Brave with a capital “B”. The word brave was suggested at the initial formulation of the project, repeatedly expressed during the process of defining the show’s parameters, and continues to be commented as we see the outcome of months of preparation.

The term “heroic” does not glorify anyone or anything but rather defines in this case, at this time, the attempts of many. As if some omnipotent force had finally orchestrated common thought, Artformz, along with a few other local venues, has taken a leap of faith in their regular programming to present and support artists of merit often not afforded a spotlight in their own hometown.

The 2007 Miami Art Fair Season brings a powerful showing of local artists. The exhibit at Artormz showcases the work of 20 independent artists, working in and around Miami, juried from over 107 submissions. The dynamics of our panel was impossible to foresee and the fresh view at Artformz is a result of the process.

The group of artists is as varied as one would expect of our culturally rich area. There is no doubt that given an opportunity, these artists have the ability to stand proudly next to any in any “Fair”. This is evident in works such as the installation and sculptural works of Donna Haynes, of Pompano Beach, who holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. With her piece “Two Sides of Myself” she has created an eloquent metaphor that addresses ideas of personal story telling.

From Miami, with an MFA from the Memphis College of Art, painter Carlos de Villasante’s piece “Triumph” magnificently explores the possibilities of intimacy in a mass produced language, combing elements of power resulting from techniques used in advertising design with those of subtlety achieved through traditional oil painting.

Other stand out pieces come from artist Kimberley Maxwell, an MFA recipient from Florida Atlantic University, and residing in Fort Lauderdale. Her three exquisite works are delicately created in oil and graphite on translucent mylar, sandwiched between layers of wood and Plexiglas. The transparencies add an ethereal quality that enhances her imagery of the mystery of life existing at a level unseen by the naked eye.

The other accomplished artists selected, in alphabetical order, are: Sarah Ballard, Jonathan Coradin, Marlene de Lazaro, Alicia Deya, Venessa Garcia, John Gargano, Rebecca Guarda, Bryan Hiveley, Matthew Krawcheck, Nathan Markham, David Matthews, Paul Morales, Darek Pala, Rosario Rivera Bond, Loren Santiesteban, Lisette Schaeffler, and Ileana Tolibia.
