Changamiré, a Washington, DC jazz/R&B vocalist, whose style is a contemporary blend of music described as “so darn compelling” launched an international CD cover art competition today. The competition period runs until January 18, 2008. The winning artist will receive a cash prize of 500 USD ($500) and the winning image will be the cover design of Changamiré’s 2008 release, “LOVE.”

We are seeking artists and collectives to exhibit work in our upper and lower galleries. We are open to all mediums, and are especially interested in the installation of art that seeks to activate the space through the utilization of multiple disciplines at once. Ideally the exhibitions will be of work that is produced specifically for the Plaines Project space.
Alptekin’s installation for Turkey’s participation in the Venice Biennial is named “Don’t Complain.” This tautological title underscores an objection, and sets off suspicions about the probable meanings of such a grievance. Who is complaining when saying “don’t complain?” Is it about the artist, the country, or the viewer?
The Szpilman Award is awarded to works that exist only for a moment or a short period of time. The purpose of the award is to promote such works whose forms consist of ephemeral situations. In 2007 all applications will be looked through and judged by: Bernd Euler, Dirk Fleischmann, Martin Flemming (prize winner 2006), Leonard Kahlcke, Patrick Koch, Tina Kohlmann, Friederike Schönhuth, Tina Schott.
War has changed. It has ceased to refer exclusively to war between nations, but involves more complex structures and dislocations. The information content the ubiquitous media images convey concerning specific conflicts is thin, they present an unchanging picture of misery as a universal constant of global crisis.
