Héctor Madera-González on view at Photo Miami 2007
Puerto Rican artist Héctor Madera-González will exhibit “Optical Borderline: housing development project” as part of the Photo Miami ‘07 special projects. The large scale installation was winner of the prestigious Lexus Grant for the Arts (2006). With a neon sculpture at its core “Optical Borderline: housing development project” juxtaposes cultural and architectural aspects that have been in constant change since in urban Puerto Rico.
The installation consists of evocative wall drawing based on old iron grill works that date back to the 1950’s, a neon sculpture and a slide show. These iron grills, offered the houses facade a dramatic and unique esthetic. Due to new construction techniques and rapid developments on the island, this craft is rapidly going into disuse, preferring the Miami style condominiums that do not contain any relation with the cultural and architectural tradition of Puerto Rico.
The piece is not only a tribute to Puerto Rican culture but to society at large. “Optical Borderline: housing development project” will be on view at the Photo Miami Art Fair from December 5 - 9, 2007.
